I have a boat that needs a new floor. I spoke with a guy about using a plastic material made by Taco Marine. It is heavier than regular wood plywood & a lot more expensive, but supposedly will last forever & never rot. Does anyone have experience with this stuff? Comments?
Thanks,
John

Never is a long time. Will your boat last long enough for a forever price to be effective?

http://www.boatersworld.com/webapp/...99215&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10051

That stuff looks just like the sheets of plastic I have... Incredibly expensive and will require a fair bit of support under it to keep it from drooping. Flex will not be a problem, attachment using various
epoxy's will hold no prob, and will outlast the boat.. now that being said, are you going to rebuild the stringers with this stuff too? would hate to have to cut this stuff up later to replace stringers.. the expense is staggering compared to regular wood that will last just fine if its prepped and isntalled properly and for about 1/8th the cost.

The largest sheet boaters world offers is 24" x 54" x ½" for $75 each And you still have to seal the seams

yikes

I don't think you can beat the cost-effectiveness of locally bought P/T Plywood.........
Around here it's readily available in 1/2",+ 3/4".......
You can glue up any size you need from that........

As a rookie boater who is pretty handy & good at figuring things out as far as mechanical, repairs, etc...how much time can I expect to put in to replacing the floor with plywood, fiberglass, etc?
Thanks,
John

Kaptain,

As I was cautioned, DO NOT USE PRESSURE TREATED WOOD if you plan to encapsulate the wood in glass or attach glass to it.

Pressure treated wood (new stuff) is very wet when you purchase it, it has significantly more weight than reqular (or Marine plywood). If the wood does not dry out, I am told it will rot from the inside out. Also you will have a very hard time getting resin to stick to presure treated, it will delaminate.

There is a lot of info on this subject in these forums, just do a search on "marine plywood".

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Marine Lumber?

my understanding as well,ED..an if'n it is dried or wait for it to,, it's usually one big warpped split checked mess..with many weak an bad spots ..for it's usually made from junk c-d grade.

if anyone is going to use doug fir marine ply ( common marine ply ).. it's great stuff but very $$$..

check out AB doug fir exterior.. almost as good an lots cheaper..

home centers don't carry it but lumber yards do an/or can order in a week..

Re: Marine Lumber?

Whatever you decide on use sealant on your bolt holes or screws [towing hooks, motor attachment, slashwell drains, bottom drain or things screwed into floor]3M 5200 slow or fast cure.Cause it will rot again if not sealed
