Marine Manifold alternatives

Just toying with some ideas on replacements for my dodgy looking manifolds. I've tried local shops and internet but replacement manifold for my engine seem to be almost impossible to find. I've tried Osco, Barr and Sierra but according to them my engine doesnt exist. Even if I could find a set, they are going to cost more than I paid for the boat so I was thinking about alternatives.
This are my thoughts so far...If I use an auto manifold I could hook it up to some SS tubing and exit through the stern. I'd need to block of the old exhaust exit to stop water coming back though the upper casing and fit some exhaust flaps and transom flanges to the ends of the pipes but that would take care of the exhaust gas. Thinking about the heat problem I could take the water flow from the thermostat and feed it though some flexible copper pipe wrapped around the SS exhaust pipe to create a water jacket/heat exchanger and then discharge the hot water either down through the old exhaust casing or direct into the the SS exhaust. I'd need to extend/remodel the engine cover to fit the new exhaust and possibly wrap the whole manifold exhaust/cooling pipe assembly in some of that asbestos tape. Sounds too simple especially as I could propably do the whole thing for about half the cost of a new set of marine manifolds (even if I could get them)
Your comments please :)

What you are talking about sounds quite dangerous, marine inboard exhaust has to be water cooled, since there is little air flow in the compartment. You may have to bit the bullet and get OE style stuff for your engine.
I know they all sell stuff for the GM V-8s, but it can be hard to find stuff for the 4.3 V-6 engines in the aftermarket.

Re: Marine Manifold alternatives

To answer tallman, the boat is a 1984 18ft seasprite cuddy with and OMC(Chevy)V6 3.8 driving a stringer 800 cable shift.
Whats driving this enquiry is the fact that it seems almost impossible to get 3.8 manifolds. I have been told that I'll get nabbed by marine police if I try to build my own exhaust system and that the USCG requirments are stringent on how much uncooled manifold cna be exposed and the external water jacket temperature

To explore a slightly different avenue, the 4.3 manifolds as fitted to the later cobras, are more easily found and about 1/2 the price of genuine OMC manifolds for the 3.8.
Does anybody know if the OMC 4.3V6 manifolds will fit the exhaust ports on a 3.8 head. They look similar and I believe the 4.3 is just a bored out 3.8 - If they fit the engine, I just need some of that flexible exhaust pipe to hook the manifold up to the sterndrive and I'll be good to go.

The 4.3ls Won't come even Close......
Unfortunately your Only alternative is to Buy Manifolds for the GM Oldsmobile 3.8l that you have.......

BTW, Flex-Pipe is Also a No-No......
