Second of a few polls....

If you could pick your own pay schedule, what would you pick. After voting if you wouldn't mind, chime in and post why you would pick what you picked.

commission is the best form of pay, as your only limitation on income is your desire to work hard. The advantage for the shop is they don't have to pay the mechanic on work not done right the first time people tend to learn to do the job right after 1 or 2 charge backs.

I have always been a hard worker and have had a good work ethic so if your willing to work and learn everything you can this would be the smartest forrm of pay to desire. If it were presented to me I would jump onit in a second and pre-notify my employer that I will be retiring early that is if he could keep me busy!

Book time is the way. If you know your stuff, you'll book 80 hours in a 40 hour week. Then it's just a matter of what your hourly wage is.

I think he's talking flat rate pay which is how auto dealer mechanics work. Book time would be how long it says it takes to do a job(mercruiser, volvo, whoever). The customer gets billed what the labor book says and that whats the mechanic gets payed on no matter what time it actually took.
ex: Quoted job(book time by service manual)-4hrs, actual time 2.5hrs. Billed for 4 payed for 4.

I didn't realize that marine mechanics didn't get paid by the book. I was under the assumption that they operated like car and truck mechanics. I worked for book time for 7 years and made some good money in that time, now I'm hourly, working for a fleet making just as much, working half as hard.

also keep in mind right now the good times of a lot of service work coming in the door is gone and their might not be a lot of work going on right now to make the money you want or need at a shop, And then what about winter time, their will be a lot more of nothing going on even thou the work or jobs are out their that need to be done, But really not a lot of people are taking them in for the basic stuff anymore when they could do it them self at home and save lot's of money. Heck if you really think about it you see it every day right here on this fourm, Look how many new people every day are coming on here and either reading as a guests or asking us how to fix their boats so they can do it them self to save some money and not half to take it to a shop that you might work at, And now your not going to get paid anything because you might have already fixed it for free hear. As you can tell the work is out their but the service shops are not as busy as they once where. hummm:eek: scarry stuff right their.

Im no expert but some here are. I think people that pop in here with very few prior post wanting to ask tech questions that will save them alot of money need to be charged . Too bad we cant so when I see someone who hasnt added anything to the forum just wanting free info I often keep quite even if I know the answer. If the person has 25 to 30 post first I will try to help.
