Hi, Does anyone know of any vocational schools where one could learn outboard motor repair? it seems that many boat owners in my area are pretty fed up with the Attitude they get at many of our local marinas when they try to get service for their small outboard motors. Would a small repair shop for outboards be a feasable business enterprise, or does on really need to have a manufacturers franchise to get reasonable prices for parts, manuals, and other necessary items? it seems that many of you guys have been in the industry for a long time. What do ya think?

thanks for your input,
John

Re: marine mechanics school

There are several outboard repair shops up here that do not hold a franchise. Although I have the deepest respect for Colleges, the theory supplied at these institutes is not adequate to jump into your own business and make a go of it. The theory is necessary, but its just not enough. The best way would be to apprentice in a repair shop enviroment and gain practical experience. Another option is to purchase a practicing business and have the seller stay on for a year or two, giving you some opportunity for hands on. Most everyone who operates a small repair shop has had previous experience, either in a dealer or private shop enviroment. As far as parts go, there is an endless supply of jobbers and wholesalers who would love your business......

Good luck! :)

johnfrom Ill....thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for. schematic, you are absolutely correct. If I decided to try this I would certainly work for someone else first to see if I had a decent aptitude for it and if I liked it. I think its interesting that i've never seen a repair shop for outboards apound here that wasn't also selling boats and renting slips, etc. I'm just giving it some thought. Thanks for the help.
John
