Hey everyone,
I really hate to start another "auto part vs marine part" thread, but I do have a question concerning the starter solenoid (the solenoid that mounts to the top of the starter).
Is there a difference between the marine solenoid and auto solenoid?
Here is why I ask -- I bought a brand new starter for my boat. Like an idiot, I overtightened the larger nut on the solenoid when attaching the battery cable to it and the stud broke out of the plastic housing.
So, I bought another solenoid (marine solenoid). Well, the solenoid I bought is bad, the contacts stick and the starter keeps running even after the boat starts -- when the starter turns enough to start and doesn't chatter.
To make sure it was a bad solenoid and not the ignition switch or something, I put a spare auto solenoid that I had sitting around onto the starter and tried it. And the starter works beautifully with the auto solenoid.
I couldn't just return the new solenoid that easily because I bought it mail order, so I have to mail it back. Now, I don't trust the solenoids from the place I bought it because I got a bad one.
Opinions?
