I was thinking about rebuilding my '87 Merc 350 with a stroker 383 w/ vortec heads and manifold. Will the Alpha 1 Gen 1 handle the extra power this motor can produce? Any suggestions on which carb to use?

If you go out,+ Hammer It,........
No.............

If you can control Your Right Hand,........
Ayuh,...... It'll hold up for a Long Time........

I like the Merc./Weber/ Edlebrock/ Carter Clone Carb.s.................
Real Simple,.... Reasonably Cheap to work on.........

Bondo,
Hammer,gernade...no thanks. Just better up onto plane time and power to move a heavy loaded down boat. Thanks for your response.I did a search on the 383 here and sounds like that's what you got!? What is your setup and how much power do you think you're pushin? Also what length boat, weight and outdrive? I recently picked up "Small block chevy marine performance" and am reading through it, just wondering how people like their upgrade.

Believe it or Not,......

Most of My Bored & Stroked 1968 327 is still at the Machine Shop,...........

I've been dragging My feet with the Old Town Atlantis project, New House,+ Too Many other things happening........

And,.....
The Machine Shop was in a complex that Burnt this summer,.......
All My parts were saved,.. But it's another set back........

The Atlantis is a 25' fiberglass boat,.. I'm guessing at 3500/4000lbs.....
I Can't wait to see what happens.....

We'll be shooting for a Strong 350hp+.....

Re: Marine Stroker 383

I took my salt water infested 350 to the machine shop yesterday to have it cleaned and inspected.
I'm going in today to talk to the shop owner and discuss what's usable and the best way to upgrade the power at a reasonable cost. Keep you all updated as I'm sure to have some more questions along the way. Been watching freebeetonys progress, learning stuff here everyday along with all the links everybody provides. Thanks All!!

Re: Marine Stroker 383

Visited the machinist today. He says for about $2500 I would have a 383 stroker with vortec heads and manifold. My block is going to have to be bored "60 over" so it is still usable!? (Rust from salt water). Does this seem like a reasonable price?? I'll I have left is a new oil pump and he recommended rebuilding the stock rochester quadrajet for economy as well as performance. This would bolt onto his volvo penta aluminum manifold. (Dual plane, high rise) He seems to think that would be better than Edelbrocks vortec performer. Any additional thoughts??

Re: Marine Stroker 383

That's Pretty close to what I'm spending on Mine,......

.030 over with the 3 3/4" stroke yields 383cid,.....
.060 over will yield 389cid.......

About Any SBC will take a .030 overbore,.....
Some SBCs will Not take a .060 overbore,.......
It's got to do with Core Shift,... It happens in the casting process,... The cooling voids end up Many thousandths from where they're Supposed to be,.. Hence Thin Cylinder Walls......

Considering the fact that a 350 Block can be had for anywhere between, Nothing,+ $100.00,.......
There's just No Way, I'd overbore a 20 Year Old Saltwater Block, .060................
I think you'll be asking for Troubles......
There are 3 Machine Shops in my area,.... You'd be hard pressed to convince Any 1 of them to overbore a block .060.... Not without a Sonic Test to determine whether there's enough metal for it........
And these are Antifreeze blocks out of Autos,...... Not a 20 Year Old Saltwater block........

As for the Carb.,....
I'm a Carter Clone kind of Guy,......
The Merc./Weber/Edlebrock/Carter Carb.s in the Smaller size, 600/650cfm, Also have Smaller venturis for the primaries,.. just like the rochester does,....
Old Rottenchesters are Many times Not Rebuildable,.... The bodies wear out around the throttleshafts,..... Then you've got to ream them out,+ rebush the body,......
Why,..???......
The Edlebrock can be bought Brand New,... For less than the Labor Bill on the rottenchester's Rebuild,...............
BTW,....... The Carter Clones will bolt to Any manifold,.........

Re: Marine Stroker 383

This is all great info Bondo!
When I got the boat this spring it had a rebuilt block from Schucks auto supply and has 120 hrs. on it. Always has had FWC, the salt was introduced during a weeklong fishin trip in the San Juans (leaking riser gasket). So the rust is wherever there was oil. I've read that 60 over was too much for marine use, do to the higher revs. I agree, I think I need to find another block. The guy at the carb shop quoted $250 to rebuild my q-jet and $350 for neccessary changes if I put it on a 350+hp motor. WTF...I'm leaning towards the Edelbrock Performer 600cfm. Thanks for the input so far!

I assume you will be running closed cooling system with this re-power. You will need to clearence the raw water pump bracket for the front 'flywheel'(harmionic balancer) as 383 is an external balanced motor. A roller camshaft is expensive but well worth it in power gained and you don't have to worry about camshaft failure from improper break-in or extended idling.

Re: Marine Stroker 383

You can get Q-Jet rebuilds from I5 Components for around $250. They have a website, plus sell on Ebay. I have seen positive comments from people who have purchased from them. You have to call them and discuss if they would have one that would be tuned to your stroker.

The 600/625 edelbrock comes tuned for a "standard" 350, so it will probably need some tuning for the stroker, as well.

Re: Marine Stroker 383

I called the machine shop guy and shared my concerns about boring my block 60 over. He still didn't think it was a problem and says he's bored them to 80 over with no problems whatsoever. He told me he would swap me my block for one that he had that needs a 30 over boring at no charge. So I'm on my way with a good foundation. He told me the flywheel would fit right in after balancing but I wasn't aware of a clearance problem with the existing water pump.I don't use a raw water pump (Alpha drive). Also my FWC bolts in front of that so it sounds like some modifying? Any specifics on what needs to be done after the external balancing? I would like to use roller rockers and lifters, any idea approximately how much more $ that option could run? I've been known to troll for hours at idle...Thanks all for the input. I think I'm sold on Edelbrock.

Re: Marine Stroker 383

The CompCams roller cam kit with the retro-fit lifters and valve springs is around $900 and a good set or roller rockers are $200. Does your engine have roller lifters from the factory? That would save you alot of $.
I am supprised that you are able to run a heat exchanger with just the water pump in the Alpha 1 outdrive. Mine gave me fits with overheating until I added the raw water pump. I'm sure that the larger displacement motor will generate more heat.
