Mariner 115 squeals

I have a '94 115 mariner and it makes a squealing noise after if warms up. You have to cruise around for aout 10 minutes before it starts. Also seems that it gets a little louder when you put it in gear but it can also be heard when it's in neutral. I've tried to pinpoint the location but kind of hard to do. It runs great at all speeds. Also drained the lower unit oil to see if any of the bearing were going bad but it came out clean. Also checked compression just for the heck of it and all four cylinders checked between 125-130. Could it possibly be the water pump. Are there any bearings where the shaft meets the engine. I'm tempted to pull the lower unit and check things out and change the water pump while it off because i'm pretty sure its never been changed. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Pulled the lower unit off and everything looks to be normal. Now I really don't know what to do. Would and engine bearing squeal like that?

Wish I had the answer for you. Not likely to be a bearing as the gear oil is clean.

Might be the water pump. Does the noise increase as you trim up? Could it be from the driveshaft. Been a few posts in the Yamaha forum about the upper driveshaft bushing. Try shooting some lithium spray grease in that area?

Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to replace the water pump while it's off. Not sure if it gets worse when trimming up. Didn't try that. Is the upper driveshaft bushing hard to change. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I'll tear appart just about anything.

Not sure if you even have a bushing at the upper shaft.

If the shaft is rubbing might see a shiny wear pattern.

The reason I suggest listening to the noise as you up trim at the dock at idle is if the noise gets louder might tell you it's from the pump.

Thanks Baileys, I'll try a few things and see if I can find anything else. Hope it's not the motor. I just don't understand why it gets just a little bit louder when I shift into gear.

Re: Mariner 115 squeals

Talked to the dealer today and he gave me the news that I thought might be the problem but didn't want to hear. He said the main bearings are probably going bad. That sucks. Now I'm tempted to fix it myself. Anything I should look out for?
