I have a 91 mariner mag ii 150 on bass boat and today I noticed it didnt sound the same. Nothing bad just different, moving to last spot before I left the engine started bogging and trying to cut out then died, when I went to start it wouldnt even try to turn over. My first thought motor locked up. When I got home I tried it again and started right up. What could have been the problem. Had water pumping out the hole and ran perfect 5 days ago. Thanks in advance for the help

I had a similar experience years ago on a 3 cylinder Johnson looper. I was young and naive in nautical mechanics at the time, the engine was purchased used from a friend and I hadn't run it probably 10 hrs. He said it was HOT. Well it was and did funny things as you are mentioning.

One day I was at WOT blasting across the lake and BAM.....just about buried my teeth in the windshield....the sucker locked up and didn't loosen up. Result was a .030 bore job with new pistons and all.....the stat was frozen shut and I don't remember if it had pee or not or if so, how it was plumbed and before the days of OT warning sensors.

Check your stats (at the top of each cylinder bank) and popoff. Opening temp is stamped on the bottom of the pellet and if I recall on my son's 150 they are 143F. Have to look on a parts list to see where your popoff (high rpm pressure relief) is located or ask Faztbullet on here. I think it's connected by hose from the top of the block in center rear down to the mid section in the rear center where the valve is located, thus dumping into the midsection ....speculation; not verified.

Texas mark do you know if there should be 2 thermostats? I have one above cylinder 1 but when took same thing off on other side there wasnt one in there.
dukedog I dont guess I have a warning because never heard it. Checked the gear oil this morning and was full with no water or metal shaving in it or on magnet. I guess I will be doing a compression check today

A V6 Mariner should have two thermostats located on the tops of the cylinder head. A 2 bolt cover I would expect. They control temp at idle up to about 2000RPM.

A 2000RPM (or thereabouts), the poppit valve opens to allow a lot more cooling water to circulate. You might check yours. It is located low on the side of the block. They have changed over the years, so if you need to rebuild it, make sure to get the exact poppit kit for your year and HP motor.

I cant locate the poppit valve and can't find it in the book? What does it look like as far as on the block

It is roughly figure 8 shaped, on the bottom of the powerhead, on the starboard side. It has 4 bolts.

checked the compression and they all seem good. tested tstat and poppet valve. I hooked to hose yesterday and let it idle. I know I should have in lake to test but was checking. the water coming out was warm and block didn't get to hot. I don't know if its me paranoid but sounds weird right behind the carbs. what it sounded like when it quit on me that day. Any more suggestions on that? I plan on getting another water pressure gauge to check if I am getting enough today. thanks
