Hi,

Can anyone tell me is this engine supposed to make a really weird sound when i come off the throttle from high speeds. It sounds like its coming from the gear caseing and sounds almost like putting it in to gear when you start off. Today in the boat it even stalled when i backed off the throttle and then restarted when we had stopped and was then fine , however we did have the trim right up when it happened. Its a 1990 EFI V6 175 Mariner long shaft trim and tilt oil injection.
thanks for any replies.

The gears case style you have is a ratcheing gear case compared to a non-ratcheing gear case. That sound you hear is the clutch banging agaist the spring. The sound is normal.

HI ! I OWN ONE OF THESE ENGINES & WHAT YOU ARE EXPLAINING DOES NOT SOUND FAMILIAR TO ME , YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE A QUALIFIED MECH. TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT , THES THINGS NEGLECTED COULD GET VERY COSTLY, C.B.

Could also be the Pistons rattling a little when the throttle is let off slightly....No load on the Pistons makes them rattle especially when they are dirty. Run some SeaFoam in your gas tank to decarbon it. I have seen a lot of motors with many hours on them rattle when they get dirty. Even motors need douched every now and then.

My Suzuki does that if you are hauling but then kill the engine with it in gear, the drag on the propeller keeps it spinning against the rachet when the prop shaft slows down.
