What exactly is the "offshore" feature?

I don't have a serial number yet (the boat is in Fl and I'm in Pa), but as far as I know the motor is a 1996.

The cowling has the Offshore decals and "Computerized Ignition System" decals.

Looking at parts listings for 1996 Mariner 225's some specify Carb'd or EFI.
Other than serial numbers and actually looking under the cowl, is there any way to tell which one it is?

The boat has been sitting for about 2 years. The current owner became alarmed about the transom flex (it has some rot) and put it on the lift and there she sat....

I'm getting a good deal on the boat, and other than having sat for 2yrs, there were no issues with the motor.

I need to try and get it running to get it off the lift and to a ramp so I can get the transom fixed.
Is there anything I should be especially careful of besides making sure it's pumping water? Are there any issues with oil injection systems from sitting normally?

Need more information... Is it a 3.0 liter or a 2.5? Is the the Hi-Po version? Got a picture? Differences between models are: clamp brackets, trim pumps, lower units, cowlings, shaft lenghts, displacement, injection style, carb styles.......

Re: Mariner 225 Offshore questions.

All I really know right now is that it "should" be a 96 model....

I was wondering just what's the difference between a "regular" Mariner 225 and an "offshore".
I know that the definitive ID needs a serial number, but here are the pics and the boat it's on.

Standard Offshore,3.0 liter carb motor, being on cat likely a 25" shaft lenght motor with stock lower unit. Would not hand over the first dollar till it had a compression check, lower unit and trim looked at.

I was selling those in '96. As Faz says, compression check, lower unit oil condition and the trim system. The 'Offshore' was just a designation for the 25" shaft....

Re: Mariner 225 Offshore questions.

Ok, thanks.
Other than a good checking over, is there anything else to watch for on these?

I've never had an oil injected O/B before, is there anything special to watch for there?
I've read about the older setups and early VRO's, but were they pretty reliable by 96?
I actually like the idea of not having to premix.
The boat has some pretty big gas tanks, so it would be nice to be able to just pump out any leftover gas into my truck at the end of the season......

Re: Mariner 225 Offshore questions.

Dont let oil tanks run low/dry and check hoses yearly for crimps/cracks/hardness. The oiler system on a 3.0 rarely gives problems but the oil tanks/sender they had some problems with.

Great, thanks for the info.

Getting the boat for free.....all I'll have in it will be the transom repair and a trailer.....
