This unit 3 small screws you remove after taking off the prop. To remove the carrier so that the prop seals can be replaced I take it you need a few very long 5 mm screws like the 3 that were removed, but very long? I can't even find any that long. Am I going about this the proper way? I am more familiar with the type where you have 2 bolts you remove and screw in some long bolts that can be attached to a gear puller. I think if I could find fine thread "all thread" long screw material, it would solve this.

You may need to rethink this.-----I believe the bearing / seal carrier is threaded into the housing.-----With a LEFT HAND thread.

Really need a serial # as you could have 1 of 3 bearing carriers. The yamaha built motor has a yamaha lower unit. Then there is the early to somewhere around 1990 motors that you can use the prop to remove it. And there is the later one where you need a special tool.

Can't take a picture with it still in there. Someone pounded the bjesus ouf ot the carrier to try to get it loose and it looks like the seal was never changed probably because they could not get the carrier out. I might be stuck with the same problem.

Thanks already FS,,,by taking the photo I could see the ON and OFF direction. I have been pounding clockwise to no avail. It has been pounded on in the past as you can see in the photo.

If all else fails, you can find a YouTube video on how to replace the seals without removing the carrier. Makes use of a slide hammer with a vise grip attachment.

My '82 has been strictly salt water use, so I'm guessing I'll have a problem getting the carrier out if the seals need replacing. In anticipation, I tried the YouTube technique on the drive shaft seals to test the theory. It worked.
