Mariner 25hp problems

I have a 1985 Mariner 25hp outboard. This motor runs great for about 30 min. The first symptom is after about 30 min, it will either just shut off like I hit the kill switch, or it will start to die and if I jiggle the throttle I can keep it going. When it shuts off, it starts back up first pull and might go for another 10 or 15 min. Eventually, it will shut off and need to sit for 5 min before it starts again. Yesterday, it shut off aftger about an hour. let it sit for 20 min. Started, but couls only run a a hair about idol. If I gave it any gas, it would die.

Due to a previous problem, I replaced both ignition coils, control box, stator and trigger. So the entire ignition is new. This problem also existed last year after I fixed the ignition. There is a steady good flow of water at the water hole. It is possible and likely that the timing is not set just right. I havent tried to fix that yet. But, when I first out it in the water, it runs great. I pulled the lower unit today, pump looks fine, but I'm going to replace it anyway. It's at least 3 yrs old.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks
Mark

Re: Mariner 25hp problems

I have the same 25hp mariner and had a similar problem, but my model have the idle adjustment part of the choke and I had to replace it, and all was well, it sounds like you have a fuel starvation after a certain point ..... Have you made sure that you have proper ventilation on your fuel tank?

Re: Mariner 25hp problems

by firsts pull is assume it is a recoil start. next time out, take an induction timing light, and a battery, connect hte pos&neg of light ot battery so you are ready. when it starts acting up, connect to the spark plug wire, and watch for a miss in the light. do it on both plug wires, this will tell wheather it is electrical related of fuel. having to cool kinda points to electrical getting warm and failing.

I do have proper ventalation, Also, I believe mine also has the idle as part of the choke. Havent messed around with that. Could you explaion that in more detal? What did you replace?

Also, I will take a light with me next time. Might be a couple of weeks. I get my bigger boat back this weekend and will want to play in that.
