Need help please! 40 ELO serial nbr 6EGL451266
Engine starts easily but will only run approx 60 seconds then dies. Have replaced fuel pump, fuel bulb, hose and engine connector, have cleaned fuel delivery lines to carbs, drained carbs all to no avail.Ignition side all appears fine. Want to get a manual but am unsure of year, dealer advised it was 89 or 90, problem is that is the year the manual changes!
Any suggestions on getting engine to run and year would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try putting a piece of clear hose in the line somewhere. If you see air bubbles start working back from there. I have seen a fuel tank with a crack at the top of the pickup (inside the tank), that would prime ok but wouldn't run, because the crack was too small to allow enough air into the system when large amounts of fuel were drawn (priming) but would allow air in with small demand (when running the engine). Or try another fuel tank.

Your engine is 1987 and the service manual is the same from 1977 to 1987, the full production range of this engine. It's part number is 90-84520-2. You'll probably find the serial number is 6E9-451266 (the 9- looking like GL). This was the last of the 'Yamaha' Mariners. The next Mariner 40 was a Mercury and appeared in 1994 as the Marathon.

Chris.........

I would rebuild the carb. IF not at least check the float to see if it is correct. Does the bulb get firm without gas seeping out of the carb?
