Re: Mariner 40 Outboard
Just undo all the bolts including the one under the anode after you get that off there will be another nut to remove. Drop the lower unit and you will see the water pump upper hosing. Remove the bolts, and the impellor is right there. Repalce the gaskets if torn, Then install the impellor with Greese on the impellor vains with the key for it, and then push the housing back down on it while turning it clockwise. It will fall into place. Now rebolt the upper housing make sure you in the same gear as when you took it down make sure you do not attempt to change the gears or the cam on the lower unit or you,ll mess it up. Never remove and reinstall in reverse gear. Either neutral or forwards is fine but, pick one before removing the LU. It may take a little wiggling to get it off, and back on. When reinstalling make sure the exhaust tube, and the water tube are lined up when reinstalling .To test it bolt it semi tight then check the shifter to see if it,s right. The prop locks one way in F. It clicks the other way in F.It spins freely in N and Locks both ways in R. if this is correct finish at that point retighten everything and go fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as Lower unit oil. Drain it look for a milky look which indicates water in the system. If all is good with minor metal chips the add new 90 weight outboard gear lube bought at any wall mart. If theres a problem with a milky look get back to here in the post to get suggestions. A fuel pump rebuild, A carb rebuild ,and hose check are recommended if it hasn,t been done in over a year or two . If longer get it done now rather than wishing you did in the middle of no where. Change the plugs. Check all wiring for loose conections or corrosion. Also check all gages for proper perfomance. Be sure to check the battery and terminals very well. when done check the tell tale to make sure it,s cooling and that the thermostat if you have one is opening. I hope this help a little scincerely George B
