Hey Guys,
I have a 40HP, 2 Cyl Mariner that won't start. Turns over but no spark. I have no history on this outboard, just aquired it as a project. There is no id plate anywhere I can see and nothing stamped anywhere I can see. Is there somewhere (other than an id plate) where I might find a serial number?

Here are some pics.

Cheers,

Hey Sniffer- Try Googling ....Mariner Motor serial number location. It will tell you where I think it is.

Hi Mercurylips, thanks for that but Google was the first thing I did after checking the motor itself. There is defo no id plate. Wondered if it might be physically stamped in some 'secret' location :)

Cheers,

Yeah, could be. I didn't recognise it as a motor serial as the leading zero is missing but i guess it does fit with what I have gleaned from a few days worth of googling.

I think I've narrowed it down to a 1997 (maybe 96 or 98) model, based on the cover design and some drawings from the service manual of that era.

Thanks for the pointer.
