Mariner 4Hp pull cord fix?

I have a older (80's) Mariner 4hp, Last time out using it, the starter pull cord came out and stuck.. I tried to coil it back up and it would only retract to about half pull. I took the assembly off, tried to coil it back with no luck. Any tips on how to coil it back up?

The closest I can get is the manual pages for merc/mariner 2.5-3.3. probably all made by Tohatsu, and might be of some help.

Thanks for the offer of help, but I ended up buying a manual from ebay.. Took it apart today and the spring was broken, ordered a new one from a local dealer for $25.
