Hi
I have a mariner 55el serial number 663L 320301 the year is 1988 this engine is Jap built with twin carburetors.
I cannot find the correct info regarding the timing setup in any manual IE.idle/pickup/fullspeed they differ in manuals around this age.
The engine will idle well at around 2 BTDC but in some manuals it states 5 ATDC in which the engine starts to cough.
Can you help
Regards
Citrixfish

Re: Mariner 55 EL

Thats a great engine isnt it,Mercaha we used to call them, the yamaha manual is better written for that engine. Idle timing On mine 0 degrees runs like a champ even on crappy fuel PU I have set at 8 btdc. Use your judgement on how your engine runs best, remember engines dont detonate beacause of a few degrees differnce in idle timing, max timing is the most important, and with today's fuel i set one or two degrees down from recommended, if you have a power loss you have set max a little to low.Good luck
