i'm not sure if you have a thermostat on that motor but i have one on my 1984 60hp, if you do it may be sticking/not opening all the way

also may be some obstruction/corrosion in the water tube and/or water passages in the block. did it just start having this problem?

i would think your impeller needs to be changed then and if it's been sitting up that long you should change it anyway

yes it should, that alarm is letting you know no water is pumping and the motor will overheat. you can probably order one on this site or crowleymarine.com or ebasicpower.com just to name a few. use your serial number to make sure you get the right one

yes you can run it like that but i wouldn't. it was there for a reason and fairly inexpensive to put a new one in

Ok, two things:

1 - Putting an impeller backward in hope to extend is life is useless. You'll simply destroy it faster.

2 - If your overheat alarm went on, it maybe too late. When they overheat, pistons expand and scored the cylinder walls. If you continue to run it, they expand until they can't move anymore and the engine seized. So you definitely need, at least, to take a compression reading on all three. I bet that #1 will be lower than the others. Or you could be fine but don't run it till you get the new impeller.

ok i did not run it for long will do a compression test today what compression should i have ??
was just wondering would it work as for the heat alarm it only comes on when the engine is idling it only sounded for a few seconds so i switched the engin off

Re: mariner 60 hp no water ???

ik i don sum looking around today 1,st found sun dirt and a small bit of water in fuel tank so cleaned it and put new plugs in striped carbs cleaned them they looked good and orderd a new impeller will b hear Tuesday so i am thinking that it was a fuel problem i hope the spark plugs looked good nice brown culler all 3 so am thinking compression is good as my compression tester will not fit the engine it moer for cars so i will try it out at sea on Tuesday fingers crossed

Re: mariner 60 hp no water ???

just a wee up date ,
now the impeller did not come yet but the old one is doing the job for now,
put the boat in water today ran the engine for about 30 minutes and no problem
on till then it started to splutter and would only run at half revs ,
it keeps bogging down so after sum looking about i found the problem .
It was a bad catch on the engine cover the cover was loose and water was splashing on the plug leads causing it to loose spark so fixed that put new plug leads on and hay presto not a bother runs sweet now :)..
just w8ing for the impeller to com in then i am sorted thanks for all the info and help guys ..
