My Mariner 60hp-4cycle year 2001 runs fine for a while then suddenly it runs on two cyl only (cyl 2 and 3). After about 15 minutes while I try to get back to the shore it fires up all four and runs fine again. This has happened twice now and I dont have a clue what may cause it. I have changed the spark plugs, fuel-filter and tried with fresh fuel. I even tried with a new coil on the two cylinders that doesnt run( 1 and 4). The servicemen I have consulted are as clueless as I am. Both times this has happened I have been running on low rpms, about 2000.
Anybody out there with some good ideas?

Regards,
Oivind

Re: Mariner 60 runs on 2 cyl only

I have found out about my problem. Its electrical. The connection to the ECM box is the problem. Its not visible in any way but when I press the cables firmly in place, the motor runs fine. I pulled out the plug but there is no sign that tells me there is anything wrong, but I will try to clean the connectors and add fresh dielectric grease.

Regards, Oivind - happy to have found out for free!

After trying with dielectric grease there was no improvement. So I disconnected the plug from the ECM and did a thorough inspection of it. I checked the cable with the same color code that comes from the coil thats connected to the two cylinders thats not firing properly. Voila! The pin in the plug was broken! I took out my gas soldering iron and fixed it. Now the engine runs as new.
Now I think my problem is solved and my summer season can start for real.

Regards.
Oivind
