Re: Mariner 80hp waterpump
No linkages on the shifter shaft. There is a splined coupling in the upper section which engages the shaft in the lower unit. Before you pull the lower unit off, either shift the motor to neutral or forward. Do not shift the control box after the lower unit is removed, and do not change the position of the lower unit shifter shaft. As long as you do this, when you reinstall the lower unit, the shift shaft will properly engage the upper shaft and it'll shift properly.

In addition to the bolts you see on the lower unit for removal, there is a hidden bolt underneath the trim tab; therefore you'll need to remove the trim tab also.

If you leave the lower unit in forward, upon reinstallation you can turn the propeller so that the driveshaft moves and engages the crank splines. If you decide to leave it in neutral, you'll have to rotate the flywheel in a clockwise direction, as you push the lower unit up into place, in order to engage the driveshaft into the crankshaft splines.

Needless to say, disconnect the fuel and battery before working on your motor!

Hope this Helps and Good Luck...........ed
