I just got a new/used boat with a kicker and went to change the impeller, when I dropped the lower unit the shift rod came up and out of the prop shaft mechanism. It's a 90 Mariner 8hp outboard. It looks like it has a wedge shaped step piece that screws onto the end of the shift rod that fits into the prop shaft/shift mechanism in the lower unit. Is there a way to get this back into position without taking apart the lower unit.

Re: Mariner 8hp shifter rod pulled out

After looking at the serial numbers it looks like it's a 1986 instead of a 1990.

It might help if you could post pics.

Re: Mariner 8hp shifter rod pulled out

My 30 HP 1982 Mariner may have a similar shift rod. I have the wedge shaped plastic piece on the bottom, but also have a plastic "Retainer Bracket" that goes around the boot and holds the whole assembly in place from the top.

My manual indicates that the rod is simply placed in the hole, with the ramped face facing aft, and secured with the Retainer Bracket (I think all done in neutral - haven't read the entire chapter).

Were there any pieces of plastic on the lower unit surface that might have been some sort of retainer?

Re: Mariner 8hp shifter rod pulled out

I didn't see any plastic retainer piece unless it came off when the shift rod pulled out. On the lower end of the shift rod is a metal wedge shaped piece that engages the prop shaft back and forth to shift from forward to reverse. This piece screws onto the end of the shift rod and somehow inserts into the lower unit down by the prop shaft. I tried pushing it in but I don't know which way the piece fits in and can't get it to stay in place. It pulls right back out when pulled up.
