Ok, so here is the deal. I am pretty good with engines, but this one has given me the same problem that I can not fix. This is a 2007 mariner 9.9 4 stroke. It will run while the choke is on, and the rpms are up. If you take the choke off then it dies right away. If the engine is cold, 8 hours or more, it will start up with no choke but will die after 3 or 4 mins. I can not start it at all when its warm with out the choke.

I have done a compression test, 138, and 136. I have taken apart the carb and completely cleaned it. When I clean it it starts right away, runs for a little bit, then dies. I have checked every fuel line, no leaks, no breaks, motor is super clean. Any ideas. I have seen and read hundreds of posts just like mine but no one has the fix in there thread.

This is not my motor so I do not have a manual for it. If anyone can help me, I will be greatly in your debt.

i had a similar problem with my 2003 9.9 4 stroke merc. i ended up putting a carb kit in mine to fix it. the float that was in mine was not adjustable. it was all plastic and with the motor up at rest, gas would overflow. i cleaned it twice with sea foam spray, but it really was not to gel up or dirty.

I dont think that the float is adjustable on this one either. Do you know why the float would keep it from running. The motor is not up nor has it been up.

Today I recleaned the carb again and it ran flawlessly for 3 hours. I mean not one issue, no consideration of dying. I let it sit for 6 hours and now it does the exact same thing it was doing in the first post. So I took it apart and cleaned it again to see if that was the problem, but that did not fix it this time.

So I can get it to run with the choke on, with the rpms up. If I take the rpms down it will die. I can get it to run with out the choke but at high rpms only. It that a float issue?

have you looked at the fuel pump yet. might want to take a look and see if that is clean. takes about ten mins to pull and clean pump. are your spark plugs new? hard to say if its a float issue, thats what was wrong with mine, but i had fuel pouring out the carb..hopefully someone else will chime in on this?

I have taken the fuel pump apart, cleaned and tested it I am pretty sure thats not the problem but the again it could very well be the problem since I am still having problems. I just dont understand why it would have run fine earlier that day

It appears that my issue may have also been in the float, or more specifically the needle that the float adjusts. I took only the float out and cleaned it and the needle that it moves. And it is running perfectly.

When you have to use the choke to keep a motor running the carburetor needs to be cleaned.---There are tiny passages and jets that plug up with fuel residue.---After you clean it and yes many times it takes folks 3 tries to get it right you should run the fuel out of the carburetor to keep it klean !

I dont disagree with you at all, I run the fuel out of it every time it doesnt matter if it sits with fuel or I run it out. I am not talking about this sitting for a month or 6 months. Im talking about sitting overnight. I have now cleaned every single removable part, every passage every jet, including idle jet. It runs great after I clean it. its just getting clogged up after that. I replaced every fuel line and filter today so if this doesnt fix it there is nothing more that I can do.
