Hello, I am wondering where first to look for problems - 1996 Mariner 9.9, 4 stroke outboard was run for about 15 minutes, after which there was about 1/2 cup of water in the engine oil. Could anyone please suggest initial tests or thoughts on what is causing this? I have not yet done any tests, just drained the oil, put in fresh, and idled it on earmuffs to circulate the new oil. Thanks!!!<br />Alan L. in BC

on larger motors the water outlet goes through the oil pan. maybe its the same on yours , ifso it could be carroded and letting water into oil

Compression check might reveal a leaky head gasket. Has the engine ever been overheated? Since you are "up north" is there a chance the engine retained some water, froze, and cracked the head or block. Outboards are self draining if left vertical. If layed on their side without fully draining, freezing is a problem.
