Mariner 9.9E Lower unit won't go back on

Hi,<br /><br />I took the lower unit off about a 1985 or so Mariner 9.9E and it won't shift when I get it back on. I put the coupler in the same place I took it off and something isn't right. The shift lever just moves the lower unit up and down.The manual said to adjust the coupler until it shifts but that doesn't work either.<br /><br />Could someone tell me what is wrong? Thanks. put both in fwd gear and move crank back and forth<br />a bit to align while u use upward pressure... <br />takes 2 guys.

Mellowyellos,<br /><br />I tried your idea and realized the shift rod wasn't going up or down even though it worked before I took it off. Tapping it with a block of wood took care of that. Thanks.
