Got a couple questions. I've had this motor for a good while but haven't used it much and always winterized it if it was going to sit more than a month at a time. I use it year round...but occasionally I'm not sure how long it'll be until I use it next, so I'll winterize it. Anyway, got it out the other day and decided to clean it up & get it ready for crappie season. Fired the motor in a test tank and noticed while cranking, it would kick back sometimes...and sometimes backfire out of the exhaust. Once I got it to actually run, it was obviously running on one cylinder and occasionally two-once it idled on all 3 but once I pulled the fast idle back, it went back to one cylinder-and continued to backfire and fart out of the exhaust (out of the prop). The boat came with a "spare" NEW switch box so I installed it-no change. Replaced spark plugs. No change. Started checking my connections and found that the wires that run from...I guess the stator down to the recifier are crusted/corroded and the insulation is falling off. Question one: Does the rectifier have an affect on ignition timing? I noticed that one wire (the one at the rearmost/center position-do not remember the color other than "green corroded bare wire") is broken off of it's terminal-just dangling. It's not touching anything that I can see, however I did not remove the starter or flywheel to inspect the rest of the wiring.
I did pull the carbs and go through them-they were perfect. Found a leaky fuel line, however and repaired that. Reinstalled but have not synced the links yet. Did not want to try to run it anymore with the wiring in that condition.
Question two: What is the typical symptom of a failed/failing trigger? I had wondered if the rectifier wiring problem would have anything to do with the poor running...and if there is no relation to the rectifier, could the trigger be failing?
Year or two ago I noticed upon leaving the boat ramp that the motor ran poorly...VERY low power, sounded to be on one cylinder but as soon as those thoughts crossed my mind, the other two started running and it took off and ran perfect from there on out. Also last December I was going to load it on the trailer and noticed same thing. No power, running on one lung, hard starting/kickback, would not idle-but almost as soon as it started, it went away and ran fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? I work with small Yamahas all the time (mostly 25esh's) but this is my first dealing with a Mercury. Our dealer used to sell them and we still have many tools but that was before I started working there (about 17 years ago). I'm sure I can figure this out but I would like at least some insight.
