I’m looking at buying a 1985 90hp Mariner Outboard. It’s the 6 cylinder. Has power trim. Boat has sat for a few years but was professionally winterized before being stored. Has good compression on all cylinders. The current owner is keeping the controls. I’m having a hard time finding controls online for the motor. Anyone have an idea what I need or where I could look? Just can’t seem to find anything that says it’ll match the motor. Any input is greatly appreciated. I’m somewhat new to boating so I need all the help I can get. Thank you!

Mechanically, most Mercury controls and control cables will work with that motor. The electrics changed over the years.

You may have a round plug at the motor with external bullet connectors for the power trim. I am not sure, since you have the old style power trim unit.

Anyway, you will need to know what style electrical connection you have. Have you verified by serial number, the year of the motor?

wiring harnesses are not cheap - if you can find one - can cost more than the control box

throttle and shift cables relatively cheap in comparison.

Seller should be including wiring harness and external trim pump.

Personally, I would look for a 1986 model, or newer.

Sorry for the late reply.. yes I have. It is an 85. It has the bullet connectors for the trim. Serial number is 6114531.

Does it have the external power trim pump and reservoir for the boat? It looks like it should.

That would normally have it's own wiring harness, yet you cite bullet connectors on the engine wiring harness, which would seem to be unusual.

A 1985 Mariner 115HP motor shows the newer power trim unit between the transom brackets. That would have two bullet connectors on the engine harness.

At this point, I am not sure what you have. The good news is that power trim is easy to wire. I would concentrate on looking for the right electrical cable for the motor.
