Mariner bleed pipe

I am trying to diagnose a rough running problem with my 30HP Mariner and in the manual I've noticed the powerhead has a "bleed pipe" which runs between 2 connectors on the cylinder block (1 at the top 1 at the bottom).

The manual says that one end of the bleed pipe has a check-valve to only allow fuel mixture to flow one-way. By sucking and blowing on a pipe attached to either of the connectors it seems to me that air can flow unchecked in either direction through both connectors on my engine.

Does anyone know what purpose the "bleed pipe" serves? And what the consequences of the check valve being stuck are?

Thanks very much.

Re: Mariner bleed pipe

As the pistons move up and down they create vacuum...the bottom cyl will draw unspent fuel that has puddled on #1 cyl..and combine it with the air fuel mixture that it has drawn from the carb. any unburnt fuel from this cyl is generally deposited into the lake.

Now isn't that a nice thing to know :(

Re: Mariner bleed pipe

Thanks for that - but what about the one-way valve?

If it's not working what might be the consequences?
