Hey guys...been surfing through the new merc website and noticed they have a few new toys to offer. Especially like the look of the new optimax 175. However, I noticed that the Mariner line was nowhere to be found. Has Merc completely dropped the Mariner engine?

Re: Mariner engines???

Thanks for the quick reply djohns. I'm just curious I guess. Do you know why Mariner was dropped? I'm guessing it's because of low sells rates or somesuch. Over the past few years, I haven't seen many newer Mariner engines on the water. I figured that Merc would want to keep Mariner around just as Evinrude and has kept Johnson around. I might be way off base but I'm just curious.

Re: Mariner engines???

bp21,

I was always told that Mercury created the Marinar line to help with their somewhat poor reputation. (Merc.) in saltwater. Whether that reputation was deserved or not-who knows.

Merc. now has a fine reputation among saltwater boaters, thus they didn't see the need for their model line complexity.

It is true, Marinars are still out there in non-US markets.

Evin./Johnson. I believe they kept both because both have strong followings. Also, the Evin. line, until recently, sported new technologies first-such as Ficht and four stroke.

Re: Mariner engines???

I am told Mariner was origionally a Yamaha product, somewhere along the way Mercury aquired it.....over the years it just became a Mercury with a different name. Whatever, good buiss sense says get rid of it.

Johnson and Evinrude were for so many years the same pony.....now the are totally different. Evinrude is the techy one, Johnson the old reliable Carbed one ....problem is, only make up to 150 HP.

Till,

I believe you are correct sir, in the smaller hp. ranges.

I was also told that Merc. looked for some "help" in their kicker and lower mid ranged sized engines. Thus the Yam. ties.

They (Merc.) still have a tight relationship with Yam.

Hey guys,

Trusty inquirer here...turns out that I was mistaken. Djohns is correct...again. Merc still makes Mariner but they are only available outside these shores. They can be found on the Merc site but I think you have to go under the "outside US" site or somesuch. Take a good look at them...still sharp looking engines. Too bad you can't get them here...guess Merc took the market and pushed Mariner to other parts.
