Ok well I got rid of my Tidecraft 15.5' with a 55HP Chrysler on it, what a mess that was. Not one of my finer purchases. Now I am looking to go purchase a 1987 Raycraft 17' with a 1994 40HP Mariner Magnum on it. Is this considered a good motor, and what should I look for when I go to check it out. The owner is going to take me out on the river to show how well it runs. Is this motor enough horsepower for this boat?

Re: Mariner Magnum 40HP

The 4 cylinder Mariner Magnum 40 is the old Merc 50, goes all the way back to the 1960's. Very well proven and extremely reliable engine. I'm not familiar with the boat, but 40hp on a 17' boat maybe stretching the friendship a little. It won't be a speed demon! My brother has a 17' runabout and we put a 90hp on it... If you still go ahead with it, then check that the engine isn't being overloaded (ie, over-propped). Make sure it will wind up to the maximum recommended rpms. I think for those engines it's 5000-5500.
