Re: Mariner or Yamaha????
The engine plate reads: YAMAHA 20A with the serial No.653 L 300386.
----------
I checked on this (Swedish) site and it is a serial no for a Yamaha:
http://www.marinshopen.se
(and button Modellguide in upper right corner, then link Yamaha on next page)

653 1972-1978 P-400/20A (20HK)

Does this No. make it a 1977 Mariner?
-------
Does not seems so...

Stamped in the bottom corner of the plate is the letter U. I'm told this makes it a 1978 yamaha?
----------
That is correct.
Se above URL in the beginning of that page.
1978 - U

A local repair shop said it was a japanese built (Yamaha) Mariner so I bought the Clymer Mariner Repair Manual 1976-89 but none of the photos/diagrams or specs seem to match my engine.
--------
Buy a Clymer or Seloc Yamaha repair manual that covers 1978 and you probably will get the correct manual.

The book also says no more than 50:1 oil ratio for all Mariners but info on my engine says 100:1.
------
50:1 is the universal mixture gas

il that is used in almost all 2-stroke outboards, but if otherwise written in instruction book or elsewhere You could try that. I would use 50:1 to be on the safe side in all cases, 100:1 mixture will not give you much margins regarding lubrication, rust prevention etc that the oil is there for.

It says MARINER on the engine cover but nowhere else. Now they think it could be a Yamaha with a mariner cover fitted!Any ideas?
-------
Mercury and Yamaha is, and has been, using same powerheads in many engines. I do not know for how long. Mercury and Mariner are, at least in later years, same engines. So probably You have a Mariner cover on a Yamaha powerhead and rigg. That would be my best guess (but I may be wrong).

Good luck.
