Mariner Outboards

I am looking into my first boat purchase after years of jet ski riding. I am going to look at a pontoon boat with a 1995 Mariner 115 hp. Is there anything I should know about this motor, anything I should specificly check? What is the reputation of this motor?<br /><br />Thanks to all that respond!

Great engine. Just check the basics as you would with any other engine.<br /><br />Compression<br />Spark<br />Condition of gear oil<br />Waterpump<br /><br />And try to find out the maintenance history.<br /><br />TMD

Marine Doctor, I am, or was, a certified auto mech, but have never even looked closely at an outboard. I have no idea how to check gear oil condition, or water pump. I also don't know even the basics of maintenance. Is there any recomendations as to reading or any other way to gain knowledge in these areas? I have rebuilt 2 of my jet-skis, but am very concerned about not knowing preventitive maint., ect so far as outboards.
