Hi people, I'm new to the forum.. great place...tons of info.

Wondering if you guys might be willing to provide some feedback on Mariner Outboards. All I know is that the line is manufactured by Merc.

I'm looking at a boat which has a 1998 90hp 2S Mariner. Wondering about general reliability, reputation, value, and so on. Or should I stay away from Mariner.

Thanks

Re: Mariner Question

Thanks,

I've been searching and reading and learned a few things and just thought someone might be interesting in sharing their current feelings on the topic.

I've learned Merc is in bed with a few manufactures.

Does anyone know if the 1998 90HP 2S Mariner was made by Merc, Yamaha or Tohatsu?

The boat I'm looking into seems perfect, my only doubt is the Mariner!

Again, fantastic site.. glad I found it.

Cheers from Toronto where the boating season is WAY to short!

Re: Mariner Question

There is one big complaint on that motor. It idles very rough. There is a fix that basically leans out one carb so that it doesn't fire on that cylinder at idle. It's in the idle jet adjustment. Some manuals show fewer turns out on the idle jet on the top carb. That's okay if you're on the same lake all the time. You can fine tune it and make it work. But if you're a puddle jumper, you need that one open the same as the other two. Otherwise when you go to lakes at even slightly higher elevations, it bogs on acceleration and never does take off. So you can have smoother idle, or reliable acceleration. You can't have both.

Re: Mariner Question

That Mariner was made by Mercury, still is, just not sold in the US market anymore.

That motor, or any, is as good as it was maintained.

Have it checked out by mechanic of YOUR choice.
