Dont want to double post but I need help with a Mariner/Yamaha. Right now it has the point style ignition. The top coil has quit firing. I think I need a ignition source coil(the one under the flywheel) and a primary coil (the one on the block. I have installed a new set of points. The motor is a 78 -82 according to the serial number which is 676 S100246. Ok my question is I have located the next generation stator plate with the sensor coil etc all still mounted on the plate. Do I have to change anything else and or is this changeover possible. Do I have to change the flywheel as well and I would assume the primary coils would have to be changed as well. If this is not possible I do have the factory numbers on the primary coil which I have found out is not changeable with the bottom coil. The number on the top coil is CM61-23. Supposedly the coil is no longer made. I would be willing to purchase both primary coils and both ignition source coils If I could find one. So there is my dilemma can anyone PLEASE HELP ME. I am going bald here. Just rebuilt motor and put rebuilt lower on and now this.

Re: Mariner/Yamaha Igntition problems

Even though the engine was built by Yamaha, some of the parts were Mercury. I haven't found that the ignition parts would interchange with Yamaha parts. You may have better luck on the Mercury Mariner forums than here. Swapping the firing leads to the coils should tell you which is bad.
