Looking for assistance from anyone with experience doing this job....I found this excellent PDF http://johnsoldmercurysite.com/whitepapers/atr.pdf which I have been getting pretty much 100% of the how to from...I removed the power head, put pawls in correct position, removed lower unit, put a 10-32 screw in the center shaft and pulled down which brought half the transmission and the larger reverse spring, using a pick I was able to pull the other half of the transmission out which included the smaller neutral spring and a small bushing, pic....
here is the inside from bottom up, from what I can tell that's the bottom of the drive shaft but it doesn't want to move - step 6 in the PDF says
"Push down on driveshaft to remove entire driveshaft/transmission assembly. On later models (powerhead installed) a long 10-32 screw can be used to pull out the transmission assembly and then the driveshaft as described in the manual."
I've tried pushing the driveshaft down and out the bottom no dice...light taps with a rubber mallet it feels like something is blocking it

What should I try next ? I don't want to damage the drive shaft trying to force it out....the seal around the drive shaft on the bottom appears to have 4 very small half moon indents.. possible special tool?? It doesn't look anything like the ball bearing lock ring shown in the above PDF tho...
