I bought a Mark 5 and discovered it had a crack in the case right behind the water inlet. The crack extends a little more then half way around the case. My guess is it probably froze. I am weighing my options to have it welded, or find another gear case. I found a Mark 7 gear case. Will it fit the Mark 5?

No, the Mark 7 gear case is quite different. Only gear cases that will fit the Mark 5 are those of the Mark 5, Mark 6 and the Wizard WH6. Depending on the severity of the crack, you MAY be able to thin the plate on the underside of the cap, effectively moving the cap inwards into unblemished threads.

Note the crack just above the water inlet by the end cap.

Are there any threads left forward of the crack? If so, the fix might work - that's a pretty clean crack.

I don't know, I will have to take the cap out and look. I ordered the special tool to remove the cap. I don't know much about these old Mercs, but this one looks nice, and the power head seems to be in good shape. I would like to see it run. Thanks for the help.
