Hi!

I bought myself a broken down Johnson 120 hp from 1992, two cyls was gone. That is history now and I'm going to assemble all the stuff again. I received the power head almost fully disassembled in two big boxes with the bolts, nuts etc in separat bags.

Now, my question:

On the bolts there are marks on the head saying either "R" (+ some additional marks), "HP", "TH" or no marks at all. I don't what this means for sure. My best guess is that the marks stands for a classification of how strong the bolt is. Since the crank case bolts have an "R" on them, and the bolts  for fastening the carburetors have no marking (it is plastic carburetors), my guess is that "R" stands for the highest classification of a bolt, that is, it's the strongest of them. In such a case I guess that all bolts and fasteners marked with an "R" is ment for positions where a major force is present. But what about the "HP" and "TH" marked bolts?

Is this theory correct? If not, what does the marks mean?

(Excuse me for my bad english, I guess that there are better words for some of the things I've tried to say).

Thanks!

/ Gote Johansson, Sweden

Re: Marking on bolts/fasteners

The letter markings on the bolts may just be a manufacturers mark and have nothing to do with the strength of the bolt. Here in the US the strength is marked with lines going from center of bolt head to outer corners of the hex. Try looking up Bolt Markings on the web and they explain it.

Re: Marking on bolts/fasteners

I read your post yesterday and wondered if the markings on the bolts could be a European marking. As Bill H pointed out, US grades are identified with lines on the bolt head.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Re: Marking on bolts/fasteners

Isn't Johnson an american engine? But ok, the model number BJ120TLEN, indicates Belgium (whatever that means).
However, there ARE additional markings on the bolts, besides the letters. Since you wrote your replies, I have actually found a few web sites that describes markings (not the letters), but none of them corresponds to my markings. :(

Thank you very much for your replies. Maybe I'll solve it before I mount the power head on the lower unit. I couldn't wait, so I assembled the engine a couple of hours ago... :)
