I met a fellow who has a bunch of older Mercury L6 engine parts...blocks cranks, rods etc...how can i positively identify what crankcase cover goes with what block...he said i can have what parts i wanted and he said that there was a notch that was cut across the block and the crankcase cover to identify them as a match...Can anyone tell me more about this and how to verify i have a match..?

Never heard of a notch but they do stamp a 2 digit number on the flanges across fom each other.
