I need to replace some plywood in my 1984 Beretta. The floor is soft an some stringers are rotten. What type of plywood do I need for the floor and what wood do I use for the beams?

Thanks, Exterior grade plywood would be pressure treated. How many layers of fiberglass mesh and rosin do I need to use when I replace my beam under my motor mount?

Try to determine how many layers are there. You may be able to tell when you start cutting. Also, head on over to the restoration forum as you'll be able to read lost of the same repairs and ask lots of questions. http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22

The plywood TD is referring to is not pressure treated. PT is too wet and would need to be dried out for a considerable about of time for the dampness to not have a negative effect on the glassing.

It is hard to take advise from an 'oops', but you are right.

I re-floored my 1983 starcraft, with good one sided 3/4" plywood. However I coated both sides and ends with multiple layers of primer (5/6 coats) to really seal the wood, then painted (yes painted) the same with 5 to 6 coats, of outside paint, then re-carpeted. This was done 5 yrs ago and I have not had any problems!!!!!!

In some places, you may see it described as marine plywood.;)

Trust me, you want to talk to him. Might even pay off to head up North of the border and bring em a six pack....

As Tacklewasher said, just don't let oops talk you into extending your hull. :D

Re: Materials to use for new floor in boat

I used 3/4 inch ext grade plywood and west system epoxy. It is rock solid. I used plywood for the stringers next to the engine to for the bilge area and green treated 2x6 for the motor mount. All wood was treated with epoxy before it went into the boat and then 3-5 layers of fiberglass depending on the location. My 12-year-old son helped me until he got tired of cutting sections of mesh for me. I used about 3 yards of mesh for this project. I still have some stringers and kickers to put in.
The stringers are about 4 inches high and I will double them up. I found 2 gal of polygard foam for $89.00 that will expand up to 8 cubic feet. I will foam and then use pt 1/2 plywood for the floor and I will epoxy the floor, new carpet and seats.

It was easier than I thought, but lots of thought.

Todd, I would not use PT ply for the deck. As it dries, it will shrink. Plus, the resin will not take too well to wet wood. I would use the same exterior grade ply for the deck, coating the edges with resin then glassing both sides.

Andy, thanks for the input. I took out the pt plywood floor when I fixed the stringers and motor mount. The floor was pt plywood. The wood floor was in such good condition, I entertained the idea putting the same plywood boards back into the boat.
Currently, It has been cold in Northern, MN. I neet to get my boat fixed to get in the water in MN
