Hello, I'm getting ready to refiberglass my transom today. I haven't read any reviews good or bad on this max bond epoxy and I have 3 gallons of it. I was going to use it to fiberglass the bottom of the deck, but I ran out of uscomposites epoxy. Do you guys think its okay to use this stuff, or should I run down to west marine and grab theirs? Being this close to christmas the moneys kinda tight. Anyways thanks for your help

Are you saying you are going to put three gallons of Max Bond epoxy into your transom rather than buying something like Seacast?

Is this the Max Bond you are referring to? http://cgi.ebay.com/EPOXY-RESIN-BOAT-BUILDING-MARINE-GRADE-HIGH-IMPACT-2GAL-/310116238243?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item48345e43a3

There are three different viscosity's of this product. If you have the low vis and it isn't over a year old then I would use it.

Assuming you want to pour three gallons of epoxy into your transom rather than spend the money on Seacast or Nidabond, I was cruising through fiberglassics and came across this ditty about transom repair. The article has some great info and I would read it before you do you the work. What I found that could help you:

"If you tried to make your own pourable transom using polyester, vinylester, or epoxy with the hardeners typically used, you would probably burn your boat down to the ground. The volume of resin would generate so much exothermic heat that it would almost certainly catch fire."

Me? I'lll use seacast or nidabond...haven't made up my mind yet...and I'd hate to see all the rest of my hard work melt away.

Thanks for all your advise, series60 yes that is the stuff I am refering to. Idonthaveaname, I've allready epoxied the wood transom to the outer skin, I'm just using the epoxy to fiberglass it in. I just put the first layer down lastnight. It seems pretty good. I used 1708. I just wanted to be completly sure because I don't want to do this in another 3 or 4 years because of the epoxy. You guys are very helpfull, I rally appreciate all the help you fling my way. Thanks

Re: max bond epoxy for transom

My first reviews on max bond: i just put a layer of csm on the bottom of 1 stringer to test it. So far i didnt like the consistency of it, it was like mayonaise, and it was messy to work with, but it did lay the fiberglass around corners great. I will do a pull test tomorrow after it dries to check the adheshion. If its all ok i'll finish up the stringers. It was pretty easy to clean off my hands though. I dont know if thats good or bad. I'll let you know my results.

As thick as mayonnaise? Is that with no fillers? What was the temperature? Which viscosity vesion of the product (low, med, high) are you using?

Re: max bond epoxy for transom

Hello. I have to say, ive taken my boat out several times to the lake and once to the ocean. Hit some pretty good swells and wakes and shes hold up pretty good. No cracks in the epoxy or joints that i can see. Only problems ive had is with the engine. Next is the upholstry. But if i had to do it over again i think i would use this epoxy again, but i'll keep you posted if anything changes.
