I am about to purchase a solid restored 1988 17' Bayliner Cuddy with a blown 85 hp Force engine on it. I have a great Johnson 150 that I want to put on it. Bayliner did not list a max at the time but rather what it came with at the time on a vinyl swatch which says 85 hp. I have a 1972 Larson Shark 16' that is rated for 140 hp. I feel as if I can put the 150 hp on it. Does anyone agree or disagree? Has anyone done it before? I need some mental reassuring (the transom is solid however).

If the boat lists 85 hp I'd think that's max

1988 light cheap construction and poor materials...... I would not do it.

So would anyone do like a 115 swap or anything on it....I feel like an 85 on the boat with 5 people is going to move at the speed of smell.

Basically I have a 1979 150 Johnson in my driveway with no place for it to go..I could prob trade it for a smaller engine or buy a different boat. I want something fast, skiable, and that can hold people. So i am not really looking for a bass boat. What else can I do with a 150 with an 1000$-1500$ budget. I am in the upstate of SC and have tried craigslist for the next 200 miles....

About the speed of smell - 5 people on that 17 footer would be intollerable for a boating outing. Especially if one of those 5 had deviled eggs prior. Stick with the stickies or get a bigger float. Edit: A bowrider would be much more "adjustable".

If you choose to put anything over 85 hp on that boat you do so at your own (and anyone with/near you) risk.

If you want a fast boat for 5 people that is NOT the one.

KEEP trying craigs list and expand the distance... 500 miles isn't that big of a deal for the right boat at the right price... I've gone over 1000 miles before..... You may be shopping for months but with that budget you CAN'T be in a hurry or you very well may end up with nothing but junk.... Even if you miss the last couple months of this season, something will turn up this winter and you can be ready for spring.

Just be aware that it is illegal in most states to exceed the values on the capacity label. So you would be better off not exceeding the rating. Of course if the boat doesn't have a capacity label, you may need to have one made. In some states (not all or even most) you can be cited if the label is missing.
