I have a 12 foot long aluminum row boat and a 17 footer. And I have a 1.5 hp Evinrude Mate and an 18 hp Evinrude Fastwin both 2 stoke. I want to know what is probably the max hp engine I can put on the 12 footer and what the max hp is on the 17 footer. And I want to know if the Fastwin is sutible for the 17 foot Row Boat.
~Thanks a lot 8)

Put the 1.5 on the 17, and the 18 on the 12. You use the 12 to fool around, let the wife use the 17 to cruise the lake with the kids.

Most,.... But Not all 12' rowboats can handle about 10hp......

The 18hp will be Fine on a 17'er.....

Here's the USCG guidelines for boat builders:

Multiply length times transom width (in feet) to get a factor.

..Factor....max hp
up to 35......3
36 - 39........5
40 - 42......7.5
43 - 45......10
46 - 52......15

*but* if you have a flat bottom/hard chine, go down one level.

Factor over 52:
Transom height less than 20" *or* tiller steering:
Multiply the factor times 0.8 and subtract 25. Round up to next multiple of 5.

Transom height 20" or more *and* remote steering:
Double the factor and subtract 90. Round up to next multiple of 5.

So if your 17 footer is 5 feet wide and 15" high at the transom, your max would be 45 (17 x 5 x .8 - 25 = 43 round up to 45).

If the 12 footer is 4.5 feet wide you could go with the 18. 8)

Re: Max Hp on Row Boats?

Max horsepower is just a suggestion of how much horsepower you should have..Ive put a 22 merc hurricane on my 12 ft aluminem and it went just fine (Scared me good) but it was fine. If i had a chance id stick my 65 Johnson on it but thats alot of work. So just put what ever motor you feel comfortable driving and what ever speed you think your capable to drive.

Hey maybe i should put my 225 VMAX on my 12ft aluminem d:)

Jt, that is extremly helpful. I did the calc and it figures right to what my transom tag recommends.
