I have a 1998 130 Johnson. I am toying with the idea of performing a ?Maximum Spark Advance? procedure. I bought the engine new and have never messed with it. I recently did a lot of carburetor work (remove and replace). My Clymer?s manual says to run the motor at 4500-5000 rpm without the prop. I do not like the sound of that.

If I do remove the prop and advance the throttle what should I expect? With the prop on I know what the rpm will be at full throttle, but what will the rpm be if I advance the throttle to full without a prop?

The boat is in the water at a dock.

Re: Maximum Spark Advance

I was misinterpreting Clymers, probably they mean to use a test wheel. I don't have a test wheel. I'm wondering if the adjustment is really necessary. I've never tried the rev at much over 3000 rpm tied to my dock. The thought of screwing around with it at WOT on the water ain't all that comforting either.
