Re: maxrules.com and serial numbers
You could order your manual from Maxrules (also known as mastertechmarine.com) They sell factory manuals. I have purchased OEM owner's and service manuals from them for my older merc. They have excellent service. I have even received personal phone calls from the guy to clarify my order and help me (see below).

It COULD be that mercury doesn't have manuals in stock for the older engines such as yours. This is just speculation. Anyway, contact Maxrules.com - they can get you a factory manual. A phone call might be of use if you're having serial number questions or uncertainty.

My maxrules.com story. I wanted a factory manual for my '82 OMC V6 crossflow. In the past I had ordered some various factory owner's and service manuals from them. Instead of just sending me what I ordered and billing me, he called me to explain the situation. The situation was that the manual I needed was very large and expensive - in its most recent version it includes many years and models of engines and thus was very large and expensive. It also was quite heavy and would be expensive to ship since I live quite a ways away from them (unless I wanted to go with book rate and 3+ weeks shipping time). Long story short, he asked specifically what I was wanting to do (exchange current jet lower unit with prop lower unit). He told me it was virtually as simple as something I'd already done (remove and replace lower unit on kicker) and would consult over the phone and/or fax me some pages if needed. This was to avoid a potential $120+ cost to me (and almost $100 sale for him!). Turns out I found an old factory manual on ebay for a reasonable cost.

Maxrules.com (AKA mastertechmarine.com) is an excellent company!
