Finally, I have the time to start work on my maxum 1800 I/O boat. The floorboard at one spot is spongy. After check the floor out I found that the manufacturer just glue the carpet straight onto the plywood without priming or painting the floor. So now I have to replace a section of it. Took the seat out and found that there is a box like section like a "wheel well" and was wondering what that is for? I will have to cut out the seat support as I am putting a captain's chair instead of the floding seat. see picture.

It may be best for you to replace the entire floor. With what I'm seeing I can imagine what you'll run into as you remove the carpet. I am currently working on mine (1990 Maxum) and was astonished to see what was done. I am not an expert in boat restoration, but there were lots of work that was done on mine which makes me wonder.

Is this a boat you plan on keeping for a while? Sounds like it may be since you are going through the process of removing the back-to-back seats at the helm and replacing with a captains chair.

I would seriously consider putting down all new wood and laying some fiberglass over it. Like was already said..you might not like what you find under the carpet.

Gentlemen I am just starting the floor replacement on my 94 XR1800. Any tips or problem area's that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am also going to put a Captains chair at the helm rather than the double. Thanks
