Hi guys...looking for opinions or real life experience from others with the same boat as above.

Ill start by saying I’m not clueless about prop set up, as many will know, but would like to hear real life experience with the above or very similar boat.
This is a friends boat we just picked up recently and after seatrial, I’m trying to get the prop dialled in. Seems a simple enough conclusion, given the details below and conclusion I’ve came to. Please tell me if anyone disagrees with the conclusion. Details are as follows, although I question the tacho being honest. I’ll tell you why after the specs list.

The following was taken during fair conditions with covers off and approx half tank of fuel (50-60 litres) and two adults at about 175 lbs each. Please see note about prop;

boat=1999 Maxum 1900sr open bow @ approx 3000lbs
engine=1999 4.3 quad carb Vortec (190/200hp)
drive=assuming 1.62 ? Or 1.81 ? Alpha gen 2
rpm range=4400-4800

performace on test run with very poor standard ally black max 21” 3 blade (well 2.5 blade more accurate)

GPS speed=43mph briefly trimmed out, most often 42mph
Rpm indicated=4600 approx*see note

*Now, it’s worth noting that I’m having to question the tacho. Reason being, that I could get it to pop on the limiter at the above max rpm indicated of 4600. I’m pretty sure that engine should see 4800 safely. One would think the limiter would be slightly above ? Anyone know ?

so we have decided to stick with a 21”, but a good stainless. Found a ex display laser 2 for it. Should see a good 5mph improvement I’d think ?
interested to hear thoughts. I had briefly considered a 23”, but the holeshot wasn’t anything to write home about. Perhaps this is down to the very poor state of the prop. All three blades have considerable damage to leading and trailing edge and one blade has around 20% of it missing.
All the above conclusions are made all the more difficult because it’s hard not to compare performance to my own boat. It’s a fast boat by normal standards, just perhaps seems a little lazy in comparison to mine. Ofcourse it’s unfair to compare the two, I suppose.
Thanks all and look forward to the discussion.

Not sure you're going to find too many folks here with the same boat / motor but there's a number of us running 4.3L MCs and some have similar setups.

I know that most 19' glass boats of your style with the 4.3 are running 21p props and that's what was on my donor boat when I got it. I've since gone to the 23p QS Black Diamond as the 21p was over revving.

Your current RPM/speed sounds about right, at least that was close to what I experienced on my '88 SeaRay 19' bowrider/4.3L:X/Alpha. I ran a 21P Rapture SS prop on it.

My neighbor had a similar boat, although a bit lighter in weight and the same powerplant. It also had a lower gear ratio. He ran a 23P SS prop.

I would tend to believe your tach. I would also be surprised if you can squeeze another 5 MPH out of her.

First question. You said quad carb. Do you mean a 4 barrel? Have you visually confirmed this? The 4.3 2 barrel is rated at 190hp and the 4 is rated at 220. The likelihood of it being a 4 barrel is pretty slim. It sounds like the same engine I have along with many other people here.

A beat up 21P aluminum prop tops out at 43mph? That sounds about right. Can you pick up 5mph by switching from junk aluminum to a performance SS? Yes.

As for the rev limiter. It’s supposed to intervene at 4850rpm on TB5 systems. So it’s possible the tach isn’t reading quite right. When it intervenes, it kind of feels like a bad miss. I’d say the tach may be off a bit rather than the limit set too low.

As for prop choice, it boils down to 21s and 23s. Mine hasn’t met a 21 it can’t turn to redline and on most 23s it gets to 4600-4700.

if you go with the laser, post your results.
