maybe fuel problems?

i have a 1971 65hp johnson outboard. when i first crank it up with the high throttle lever up it runs fine. but, when i push it down to the run position it just dies. sometimes i can run it with the govenor and it does alright until i rev it up. then, it dies. i've changed the impellor, spark plugs, checked them for spark, gas, gas tank, and fuel filter. it seems like it's not getting enough gas to me. it's not leaking the pressure off cause my ball in the fuel line is staying hard. i took it to a marine repair shop and they couldn't figure it out either. is there something else that could be wrong too? thanks for taking the time to read this..

can't tell much from whether the bulb stays hard or not. I would suspect carburetor issues -- may be a blocked main jet. Actually, I guess that model has two carbs. One or both may be in need of at least a cleaning, and maybe a rebuild.

the guy at the repair shop i took it to said all 3 carbs were out of adjustment. he said he'd try that and it ran fine in the tank. when i took it out it died in about 20 minutes.

sounds to me like a carb adjustment issue at a minimum -- more likely a little more than that. I would run it by the mechanic again. Rebuilds aren't cheap, and you may want to consider at least attempting a cleaning yourself -- but see what the mechanic says, and what he quotes.
