Found a old 200hp-292c.i. straight six MerCruiser and was wondering about compatibility with my 165hp-250c.i.
Surely the engines accessories are the same, but the deck height is taller on the 292 and I wonder what I will have to do in order to make that work with my riser and engine to outdrive exhaust coupler, any idea's ?
Perhaps the deck height difference is so negligible that the rubber coupler will have 3/8" less material pushed onto the riser and outdrive ?

I also wonder if the 1.65 drive will work properly with the 200hp or is a different ratio recommended ?

Here the engine, they want $1200 I plan to offer $800+tax and I'll pick it up I guess.

Re: MC 200HP-6 vs. 165HP-6

Howdy,

I had a 66 boat with a 150 Mercruiser inside and wanted to do the same thing.

I had the service manual for both the 150 and the (for that year) 190/292 L6.

I found that the engine mounts are completely different and the transom shield was different because of the different engine mounting arrangement.

They also did not have the 292 bolted to the Mercruiser #1-A/B/C drives. It was only offered (in 66) with the Mercruiser MC #2 drive which had different front & rear mounting.

I thought I could still do it but since it required a different harmonic balancer, and that balancer wouldn't fit in my front engine mount I decided it wasn't worth the trouble of trying to fab engine mounts.

You can rebuild a 250 to make all the hp you need easily.

Cheers,

Rick

I even thought about using a 230/250 vib-damper...so I could use the same Merc front mount but I was worried about not having enough mass in the damper. Bad things happen when the vib damper is wrong!

Also, I discovered that all the heads are interchangeable with all the blocks 230/250/292. (except the head that has the integral manifold which everyone told me to stay away from boat or truck!)

I think the inline 6 racing guys put 230 heads on the 250's to get more compression etc...

I had big plans for Dad's old Marktwain! (That is, until my brother sold me on a GREAT DEAL on an 87 Four Winns Liberator with a WUNDERFUL OMC 460 KING COBRA :eek::eek::eek:) The rest is history!

Have to correct you, the 292 (known as the Mercruiser 200) was a 1969 only application, rated at 200 hp. Merc didn't offer it any other year. In '66 there was a 153 and a 230 GM inline 6 available. 1969 was when the 'R' drive started being used (if I'm wrong, someone say so). At any rate, I have a 1975 Crestliner with 250 (Merc 165) that a 292 has gone in place of. Thus far, refabbing a motor box, rerouting the hoses for the exhaust manifold issue (service bulletin on it) and finding the longer exhaust hose, I've had no issues (other htan the new floor..).

Not sure why you and I are repling to a 2 month old thread, but here goes.
According to Merc, the model 200 (292cu. in.) was used in both 68 and 69. It was used ONLY with the II drive.
The R drive was only used in 83 and 84, in 85 it became the MR for that year only and in 86 to 90 it was called the Alpha I.

Because I knew you couldn't resist...the 250/292 thing will never die, especially since a transfer interrupted my progress.
