If you have the drive tilted up, the lower half will want to be in forward due to a thing called gravity. The gears will want to move towards the center of the earth, and we cannot stop that with the drive in this position
But seriously, if you have both halves in forward, you assure the shift splines align when you put them together. Unless your boat trailer is really high or your boat is in a rack, tilt the drive out when reassembling and the lower unit will want to stay in forward.
Don't forget to grease the splines and replace the quad ring that seals both halves lube passage. Also don't forget to put the trim tab screw back in the lower (if it was removed first) before you assemble.
