Hi,
I've removed the bottom section of the stern drive from my boat to replace the pump impeller. Two re-assemble the stern drive is it necessary to put the boat and bottom stern drive section in fwd gear?

Thanks

you should have done that before disassembly but you can put it in gear still there is a small pic of how to do it floating around somewhere

So just use the boat controls to shift the top section into fwd and shift the bottom section as outlined? Or do I have to take a cover off or something to view a shift arm? Shifter worked perfectly before.

Would anything have been damaged by taking the two sections apart not in fwd gear?

Yep just like renny1 said it should have been in forward when you pulled the drive. On the bottom of the top section of the drive, you can see a small brass piece about an inch long which must be pointing toward the bow. Just push the shifter forward places it in this position. On the top front of the lower have of the drive there is it's matting piece, move it to point forward. Slide the two haves together and ensuring nothing is in a bind.

You shouldn't have damaged anything by taking it off, but you can not get it back on without going to Forward.

Hi,
I've removed the bottom section of the stern drive from my boat to replace the pump impeller.

All of the responses about it needing to be in forward before removing it only apply to removing the entire outdrive. If I understand you correctly, you simply removed the lower unit, correct?

It could be argued that it does not need to be in forward to reassemble, but it simplifies things greatly. (In theory, as long as the lower was in whatever gear the shifter is in it will go together and work just fine). But yes, the easiest way to ensure it is the same is to put everything in forward gear and reassemble. It also keeps you in the habit of automatically putting it into forward gear before disassembling or reassembling anything.

If you have the drive tilted up, the lower half will want to be in forward due to a thing called gravity. The gears will want to move towards the center of the earth, and we cannot stop that with the drive in this position :D

But seriously, if you have both halves in forward, you assure the shift splines align when you put them together. Unless your boat trailer is really high or your boat is in a rack, tilt the drive out when reassembling and the lower unit will want to stay in forward.

Don't forget to grease the splines and replace the quad ring that seals both halves lube passage. Also don't forget to put the trim tab screw back in the lower (if it was removed first) before you assemble.
