mc culloch 45 horse .... i need help !!!

HELP PLEASE !!!! i have an old mc culloch 45 horse outboard that is cranking like it has too much compression .... is there a pressure relielf valve on this engine ? also i can not get any spark at the plugs . if i pull the plugs it cranks fine . i have a wiring diagram but cant seem to get any spark . Thanks in advance Pat

The starters on those motors were marginal at best. If not in perfect condition or getting full voltage, they will not crank satisfactorilly. Check all your cables and connections. And battery.

As for the igniton, Check your diagram and make some voltage checks.

2 cylinder motors have a battery ignition.There is a Ballast resistor usually mounted near the key switch. Point gap is .020.There is an alternator generator under the flywheel.

Re spark. Pull the flywheel and clean the points with with fine sandpaper. Check gap (.020"). Use an Ohmmeter to check if coils are ok and if coil wire is connected to coil. With one lead in the plug wire and another attached to either of the other two small wires running out of the coil you should get a reading, the same on both coils. If there's no reading then remove the coil, remove the coil wire and check the reading directly. If infinite resistance then the coil is open. Coil readings are about the same as for an OMC 35, you can chec k an OMC manual (also for pictures).
