MC1 drive unit removal

I removed the drive unit on my MC1 last night. Twas a first for me, and all of this is a first for me, IE working on a boat. More of a tractor guy....
Is there anythign here that screams throw in the towel or start looking for a new one etc... I thought it looked "OK" just some corosion (white stuff should clean up i hope)

WHy did you pull it? Was there an issue?

I gotta replace the plywood transom on this boat..... going to clean/reseal and new bellows going back in when it's ready

Gotcha. If it wasnt leaking or grinding then its fine. If I were you Id at least change the impeller though.

ShowMe, I don't see anything too horrible on that drive. The u-joints are not rusty, and the gimbal is all greased up. That shift cable might be worth replacing, escially since you're gonna have all that stuff out to replace the transom. And since you're replacing bellows.
But that drive corrosion isn't bad, just scuff it off and spray it black! The rear bearing carrier or the case near the prop didn't look right, though. Has it been broken all jagged, or is it old corrosion? But if it holds pressure, then it doesn't need to be replaced either. And the corrosion on the gimbal stuff looks like it scrape off and be okay. I'd say it all looks pretty darn good, considering how OLD that drive is.

You do understand that pulling the drive is a yearly thing for preventive maintenance. How else do you grease the coupler splines?


Clean all that corrosion off, and repaint everything. Looks like that drive hadn't been off in years, might want to replace all the bellows and the shift cable when re-installing.
